The Story

The Story

Imagine you are in Tokyo or Fukuoka and you want an affordable haircut, you go on your phone to browse for a nearby, good-rated hair salons. You stumble upon a local Bamboo DA salon nearby your location and when you open the website this is what you see…

This would probably be your reaction. It was my reaction as well. And potentially many users interacting with the site.

Key Takeaway: Designs must stick to brand guidelines, generate interests for potential young adults looking to join the Bamboo DA company, create a responsive and accessible web/mobile experience so users can quickly check-in for hair salon appointments.

New flow chart where users can check-in and visit the recruit page in an informative and timely manner

Working closely with the development team at Bamboo DA, they had 2 requirements:

  1. Primary: Streamlined way for users to access the check-in system

  2. Secondary: Showcase and highlight the recruit page

Things Ive Learned

During this project I've learned a lot. As a designer and as a active team member.

  1. Language Barrier: The team primarily spoke Japanese (with some English knowledge), whereas I spoke primarily in English. During this project I had to convey my designs to the team in both in Japanese and English, this was truly a challenge since my vocabulary was limited ( but improving everyday with Anki memorization cards!).

  2. Japanese Web design versus Western web design: In this project work, I learned that Japanese web design focuses more on information, more content and information is being presented throughout the website, This is in stark contrast where in western design focuses on more so on balance between visual and content design.

  3. Lifelong friends: I had the pleasure of working with talented individuals who became one of my closest friends. One of my goals is to work and travel in Japan as a designer and this truly a special moment in my career.

  1. More and more testing: I would like to implement more testing to see if the placements of the "Check-In" buttons and other cards within the website are working as intended. I would propose A/B testing and see if users are able to successfully find these pages in quick successions.

Given the opportunity, I would like to work with future Japanese web and mobile designs. I love to learn new aspects of design that isn't so western centric. I learned a lot from this project, and I would say my communication skills have also increased.
